  205.             "Truth About Translation" is a three-part program 
  206.             that clears up many misunderstandings about translation
  207.             and interpreting.  It is directed towards the general 
  208.             public and especially those who work with computers.  A 
  209.             great many people mistakenly suppose that there is 
  210.             nothing more to translation and interpreting than 
  211.             substituting one word for another in a second language. 
  212.             
  213.             But translation often requires a considerably higher
  214.             level of perception and skills in a number of different
  215.             areas.  Learning a second vocabulary correctly is often 
  216.             only the first of many steps.  Other fields that must 
  217.             be mastered are writing and editing (or for interpreters, 
  218.             skills in public speaking, acting, and quick thinking), 
  219.             mastery in both languages of the subject matter being 
  220.             translated, and crystal-clear understanding of grammar 
  221.             and usage in both languages.  Perhaps the most important
  222.             requirement is the slow and gradual cultivation of a
  223.             form of bilingual seeing, hearing, and understanding, 
  224.             which will make it possible to tell when two entities or
  225.             situations as expressed in two different languages or
  226.             cultures are truly simmilar and when they are truly
  227.             different.  Pliny the Younger expressed this quality
  228.             rather precisely almost 2,000 years ago when he observed:
  229.  
  230.                    At the same time, what they may miss
  231.                    in reading, they cannot avoid in translating.  
  232.                    From this process intelligence and judgment 
  233.                    are acquired.
  234.  
  235.             This is another way of saying that the translator must
  236.             always be on the alert to avoid errors.  Just as no human 
  237.             being can understand every book written in his or her 
  238.             native language, there is certainly no way a translator
  239.             can accomplish such a feat with two languages.  Thus, 
  240.             specialists are absolutely crucial--just as in law or 
  241.             medicine--to ensure adequate results.  While a few principles
  242.  
  243.             are shared by all forms of translation and interpreting, 
  244.             there is usually no such thing as "generic translation."
  245.

  248.             *    translation--so-called "machine translation"     *
  249.             *    methods--have repeatedly failed altogether or    *
  250.             *    fallen demonstrably short because their authors  *
  251.             *    have not been able to accept or to understand    *
  252.             *    the basic ideas outlined above.                  *

  255.             The three parts of "Truth About Translation" demonstrate 
  256.             these ideas in different ways.  The first section
  257.             ("Translation and Translators: Quotations Through the 
  258.             Ages") gathers over 2,500 years of observations about 
  259.             translation and interpreting and shows how complex these 
  260.             arts have remained from the Ancient Sumerians right down 
  261.             to the latest translations of texts on Molecular 
  262.             Biology.  Ultimately, no truly faithful translation can 
  263.             be created unless the minds of translators can come 
  264.             extremely close to approaching the knowledge and skills 
  265.             of the authors they are translating.  This can become
  266.             painfully true even where truly "simple" texts are
  267.             concerned.

  269.             The second section ("Famous Translation Bloopers By Man 
  270.             and Computer") presents hilarious real-life 
  271.             illustrations of what happens when the translator's mind 
  272.             fails to capture the mind of the author and/or the 
  273.             meaning of the text.  Many of these ridiculous and
  274.             outrageous translations were produced by poorly trained 
  275.             translators or simply by NON-translators who imagined 
  276.             the task was easy.  But the examples of computer 
  277.             translation shown in this same section easily outdo 
  278.             these human amateurs in the number and unpredictability 
  279.             of their errors.

  281.             The last major section ("Spray It Again, Sam") uses a
  282.             semi-humorous history of language and translation to
  283.             explain why so many of us have so many problems with
  284.             languages, including our own.  Its major thesis 
  285.             is rooted in evolution and biological processes
  286.             and suggests an alternative to the widely held Chomskian 
  287.             view of language, since these widely held trans-
  288.             formational/generative theories of linguistics may be 
  289.             inadequate to describe practical problems of translation.
  290.             Far from satisfying such highly intellectualized
  291.             preconceptions as "universal grammar" or "deep structure,"
  292.             the origin and use of language may spring from far 
  293.             more basic human and animal habits.  
  294.  
  295.             A brief quiz on the history of translation and inter-
  296.             preting provides an addendum rounding out the program.  
  297.             Fully one-half of the quotations contained in the first 
  298.             section do not appear in any work on translation history, 
  299.             and only a small fraction appears in any one such work.  
  300.             They are also notably absent from works on cultural 
  301.             history, anthropology, and linguistics.  Perhaps most 
  302.             ironically, many of these quotations have never before 
  303.             been translated  into English.

  318.             this program is entitled "Truth About Translation Enhanced"
  319.             and presents several additional features.  First of all, 
  320.             both the Quotations and Bloopers sections of the program 
  321.             are considerably longer (providing twice as many quotations
  322.             and three times as many bloopers).  There is also an 
  323.             additional section: a 14-question Quiz on the history of 
  324.             Translating and Interpreting.  An additional program
  325.             showing some of the problems of "machine translation has
  326.             also been provided.  Perhaps most important, a complete 
  327.             "scholarly apparatus" is available in the unabridged 
  328.             version, making it possible for anyone to locate the
  329.             precise source of any quotation.  Fully one-half of the 
  330.             quotations contained in this program do not appear 
  331.             in any work on translation history, and only a small 
  332.             fraction appears in any one such work.  As is made clear
  333.             in the program itself, this material is also not found 
  334.             in works on linguistics, cultural anthropology, history, 
  335.             or literature.  Perhaps most ironically, many of these 
  336.             quotations have never before been translated into

  398.         5.  HOW TO RUN THIS PROGRAM AND/OR INSTALL IT ON YOUR

  402.             BBS or a CD-ROM disk, simply unzip it using the widely 
  403.             available PKUNZIP.EXE program.  Some Dos Shell programs 
  404.             such as XTREE have their own built-in UNZIP programs.

  464.             It is very easy to remove this program from your
  465.             Hard Disk.  Simply delete all its files from the
  466.             directory where you have placed them, and then
  467.             delete the directory itself.  See your DOS or

  472.         6.  HOW TO PRINT OUT THE TEXT FILES:

  474.             You can print out either ALLTEXT.ASC or any text file 
  475.             (such as this one) by simply copying it to your word 
  476.             processor and printing it in the usual way.  Depending 
  477.             on the typeface and margins you choose, you will need
  478.             approximately 25 pages to print ALLTEXT.ASC.

  481.         7.  TYPE OF SUPPORT OFFERED:
  482.  
  483.             Both "Truth About Translation" and the full registered 
  484.             version are very easy programs to run and have 
  485.             encountered no insoluable problems during the testing 
  486.             phase. They are furthermore based on an extremely 
  487.             successful Shareware program called Automessage (see 
  488.             below), which has itself gone through three successive 
  489.             versions and been thoroughly tested over a three-year 
  490.             period.

  492.             The only problem one user has encountered so far
  493.             has involved running this program with certain kinds
  494.             of "screen savers" or "screen blankers" automatically
  495.             loaded into memory when their computer goes on.  The
  496.             solution here is simply to disable such screen savers
  497.             or screen blankers (see the manuals that came with
  498.             them for details) before running this program.  In
  499.             some cases, it may become necessary to remove a line
  500.             from your AUTOEXEC.BAT file in order to do this.
  501.             See your DOS manual (or ask a computer-wise friend) 
  502.             for details.

  504.             All of this is a friendly way of saying that we do not 
  505.             expect you to run into any problems with this 
  506.             program--or at least no problems that you cannot solve 
  507.             for yourself.  IMPORTANT: No shareware support and no 
  508.             handholding is in fact available for the free version 
  509.             of this program, though this is a feature of the fully
